We are happy to announce that after several months of efforts Aegean Bulk Co Inc is now certified to ISO 50001:2011 “Energy Management” standards by Det Norske Veritas.

Released in June 2011 by the Geneva-based International Organization for Standardization, the  ISO 50001 standard is a global energy management system developed to continually improve energy management performance, including energy efficiency, energy use and conservation.   The system provides shipping companies  a way to take an active role in reducing their energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions onboard ships, and to respond to economic constraints in the global market. The ISO 50001 standard presents a comprehensive and clear approach to smart energy use, and allows companies and ships to reduce their energy consumption and take advantage of renewable energy technologies. 

Furthermore, same day Det Norske Veritas issued to Aegean Bulk Co Inc ships statements of conformity of Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plans (SEEMP) with the new amendments to Annex VI of the convention for the prevention of pollution from ships(MARPOL) related to reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from ships. The amendments require both new and existing ships with a gross tonnage of 400 tons or greater engaged on international voyages to retain a SEEMP onboard on or after 1 January 2013. This is a voluntary SEEMP evaluation program provided by DNV to improve the energy efficiency of  ships included in their plans in accordance with the IMO guidelines.

Aegean Bulk Co Inc., had previously achieved certification against a number of internationally QHSQ standards, among them ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and Green Award.

Now, Aegean Bulk Co Inc.,  joins an elite group of companies around the world that have certified their systems and processes against the ISO 50001 standard and demonstrated best practices for energy use and conservation onboard the fleet vessels and at the Aegean premises.
